Teacher of the MonthÂ
Our teacher of the month for July is Harry Han. In addition to being a Music Box piano teacher, we are pleased Harry also acts as collaborative pianist for all our Recitals!
Background (education/other):
Bachelor of Music in Comprehensive Piano, University of Victoria
Favourite food:
I like sashimi and seafood in general. My favourites are salmon sashimi and lobster.
Favourite thing to do/hobby:
I like to re-watch my favourite movies. I also enjoy playing video games after a hard day of work or practicing.
Fun fact about me:
I also studied Biology and General Science at University of British Columbia for two years. Although I found it to be not a good fit for me, having knowledge in a different field of area other than music gives me interesting insights about life.
Teaching Style/Philosophy:
Relaxation is very important in playing an instrument. If any joint in your body is stiff, it will block the current that flows from your brain to the fingertips. But if your body is completely relaxed, how does one put force into the keyboard? The answer is that you don’t put force, but rather use the natural weight of the upper body. In order to support that weight, one needs strong fingertips. The technique of relaxation may sound easy but it is actually very difficult to obtain. For children, this is difficult to do because they are still small so they don’t have that much weight in their upper body. However, I always tell them to play with fingertips so that later on when they have acquired strong fingertips, they can learn how to relax and use the weight of the upper body.Harry has two remaining spots on Tuesdays. We advise contacting us now for this great teacher! |
