Powwow dancer Nyla Carpentier will lead participants through this high energy dance workshop. Explaining the basics of powwow dancing and touching on its history. A fun, interactive workshop to get your feet dancing to the beat of the drum.

Nyla Carpentier is Tahltan, Kaska, French and Scottish. She began dancing at the age of three at the Odawa Powwow in Ottawa, ON. With over 25 years of experience, Nyla has been teaching all ages for the last 5 years.

Mark Richardson-Guitar

Mark Richardson is an active guitarist, session player, song-writer and teacher in the greater Vancouver area. Originally from Manitoba, Mark studied classical guitar at Brandon University and then continued his studies at the Vancouver Academy of Music under Robert Jordan and Hanh Nguyen. Mark has played everything from heavy rock to jazz and blues, and from country to musical theatre, but always returns to the beautiful textures of the classical guitar; a love since childhood. Mark is a music educator with over 25 years of experience and gives instruction in both traditional and Suzuki methods of guitar. When not performing around the Lower Mainland, Mark can be found teaching at the Mozart School of Music in Burnaby.

Ruel Morales-Guitar

Ruel’s foray into music began with piano lessons at four with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Ten years later Ruel taught himself how to play the guitar exploring rock and metal genres.

With the start of his first formal guitar training at Kwantlen University in September 2003, Ruel began his venture into classical music and jazz. Eagar to express himself not only inside but outside the confines of academia, Ruel was the guitarist and a songwriter for his former progressive rock group, Drasis, who released their self titled EP in 2005.

Ruel started at UBC in September 2005 majoring in Classical Guitar with a minor in Composition. His B. Mus. degree was conferred in May 2008, the same year he produced and performed on the Allegra Trio’s album, East-West Journey.

Currently Ruel resides in Vancouver, BC where he works as a composer, teacher, and performer. Ruel’s most recent release is a solo guitar album entitled, Christmas on a Solo Guitar.

Harpist and vocalist Janelle Nadeau provides a refreshing approach to the harp. This classically-trained harpist plays a variety of Celtic, Spanish and popular music as well as her own compositions. Janelle’s experience with co-writing opened new doors for her, encouraging her to use her voice, as well as the harp, to express her music. This born-and-raised Manitoba farmer’s daughter makes her career as a harpist in Vancouver but each August Janelle returns to the family’s grain farm to help with harvest. Janelle’s small town farming roots, coupled with her humorous and charismatic persona, guarantee engaging music that will capture the hearts of any audience.

Janelle Nadeau graduated in 2008 from the Harp Performance program at the University of BC. She is a member of the acclaimed Winter Harp ensemble, which performs Celtic, medieval, and classical music touring British Columbia, Manitoba and Alberta. Janelle has played with the Vancouver Opera and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. This Manitoban harpist has toured with the Health Arts Society, with the Canada National Youth Orchestra, Manitoba’s popular Home Routes and created a tour with the Manitoba Arts Network. She has performed for Celebrity Cruises and has played in the backup band for Kanye West. Janelle is the 2008 first place winner and the 2006 second place winner of the Winnipeg Women’s Musical Club competition. Janelle studied harp with Richard Turner, Heidi Krutzen and Rita Costanzi. She has toured and played with world-class harpists Kim Robertson, Deborah Henson-Conant and Patrick Ball. Janelle’s musicality provides an eloquent touch to any event as she plays music that spans many genres.

Following her 12pm performance, Janelle will be holding a FREE all ages drop-in workshop @ the River Market Food Hall beginning at 1pm! She will explain the wonder, history and fabrication of the harp. This is a rare opportunity to see this beautiful instrument up close, sing a song with it and have an opportunity to maybe even touch it! www.janellenadeau.com

Fana Soro – Djembe Master

Fana Soro, hails from the Senoufo tribe in northern Cote d’Ivoire and spent 9 years as a member of the prestigious Ballet National de Cote d’Ivoire touring England, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, Martinique and West Africa. In 1990, he moved to Norway to perform throughout the Norwegian educational system and work as Artist in Residence at the International Children’s Museum in Oslo. From there, Fana continued to tour throughout Northern Europe with the celebrated West African group, Super Djembé Kan. In 1997, Fana moved to Vancouver and formed Masabo, a performance group specializing in traditional West African music, dance and story. Fana and his family have made their home in Ottawa since 2010. Come learn the sounds of the drum with Fana on June 8th- outside if it’s nice, inside if it’s not. Drums and fun provided!

Russell is a percussionist who plays marimba, djembé, dununs, bodhran, and congas with over 25 years of professional playing and teaching experience. He teaches African and Afro Cuban drumming and performs in various musical settings and situations. He’s toured with Sarah McLachlan and currently tours regularly with great contra dance bands. He’s accompanied literally hundreds and hundreds of contemporary dance classes and has run his own hand drumming school for 18 years. Russell will be leading a FREE all ages drop-in hand drum workshop @ the River Market in front of Donalds!

Christine Eggert – Since first winning competitions as a young child, Christine has loved performing. At age 16 Christine debuted on CBC radio as a piano soloist, and has since performed across Canada and internationally in the United States, Austria, and Ireland.

Christine performs regularly in Vancouver both as a soloist and collaborative pianist, and has appeared with the Out For Lunch series at the Vancouver Art Gallery, as well as the Silk Purse Series, the Ryerson Summer Concert Series, the Dodson Room Concerts, as well as the Bluthner Piano Series and for the HealthArts Society. Christine works as pianist for the Vancouver Peace Choir, and maintains a busy teaching schedule, both at the Vancouver International School of Music and privately.

Dan Kocurek-Canadian-American trumpeter Dan Kocurek has worked extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, studio musician, and clinician and is a champion of new and accessible works for trumpet.  Dan has been the recipient of a number of prizes, notably tuition scholarships at the Manhattan School of Music and the Chicago Conservatory of Performing Arts.

Shortly after finishing his Masters, Dan won a position in the world-renowned Dallas Brass, where he helped bring music to people of all ages.  He has performed throughout the United States and Canada, in front of audiences numbering from ten to over 10,000.  Since then, Dan has been in demand as a featured soloist with the University of British Columbia Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Chamber Strings, as well as the Vancouver Bach Choir, the Pro Nova Ensemble and the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. He is currently Acting Principal Trumpet for the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, the Kamloops Symphony, Western Canada Theatre, and the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, as well as maintaining an active freelancing schedule. Dan performs on Wedge mouthpieces exclusively

Dan & Christine’s programs have been hailed as “musically provocative, presented with charm and a deliciously human touch” and encompass repertoire from the passion and lyricism of the 19th-century ‘cello repertoire (played on a custom 4-valve Flugelhorn), to the swing and swagger of jazz and the fiendish virtuosity and fire of the Tango.

Evan Arntzen is a saxophonist, clarinetist, and vocalist born and raised in Vancouver. Coming from a musical family, he was instructed by his grandfather, Lloyd Arntzen, who taught him New Orleans jazz from the time he was seven years old. Evan has also proven to be in demand as a guest soloist, having performed in the bands of such notable bandleaders as Brad Turner, Peggy Lee, Francois Houle, and Bryan Shaw. Evan’s travels have taken him many places, having performed in the Netherlands, France, China, Japan, and across the United States and Canada. In the fall of 2011, Evan moved to San Antonio for a few months to join the Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Evan has won several awards including the Mayor of Vancouver’s Arts Award as an Emerging Artist in Music (2010), the Kobe Award at the Breda Jazz Festival in the Netherlands (2010), the Grand Prix de Jazz at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival (with the Amanda Tosoff Quartet), the CARAS/Musicounts Fred Sherratt Award (2009) and more! Guitarist from Norway, Lars Darlin joins Evan today, not to be missed!
