Music Box Monthly

October 2016

It’s Mid October but we’re gearing towards December Performance time! If you’re a current student, now’s the time to sign up for your recital! If you’re not a current student, here is a short list of why I think it’s so important to get music students performing early & often:

1. Challenge Yourself. Preparing & polishing a recital piece takes a lot of work. Months of preparation normally go into the process of learning & perfecting & memorizing for the big day. Recital goals give bigger picture direction to weekly lessons and display important markers in learning.

2. Measure Progress. How is your child doing in lessons? It’s hard to say sometimes if they always practise at Grandma’s house, or on their keyboard with headphones and you’re not musical yourself. Seeing them on stage showcasing something they’ve taken extra care to prepare is a great representation of where they are in their musical journey.

3. Be Encouraged. Students watching other students on stage is a learning experience like no other. Seeing peers succeed and perform brilliantly motivates like no teacher or parent can. As well, seeing peers sometimes make mistakes but recover with grace can even a benefit, it reassures that no one is flawless and how we handle ourselves when we do slip is important.

4. Have Fun! Our recitals are EVENTS. Families regularly tell us that our recitals are a highlight and they really look forward to them every year. Students say they are excited to play, see their friends and get dressed up. Stage fright is thankfully rare when you regularly get up on stage to perform infront of others from a young age. There is so much pleasure as a teacher & parent & performer being up on stage, comfortable & having fun, what a memorable day to share with family & friends!

Let us know if you’re interested in playing (must be a CURRENT student to perform). Best preperation sees best results!

Have a great weekend,

Vashti Fairbairn
